What is Oxytocin?
Oxytocin is a naturally occurring 9-amino-acid cyclic neuropeptide produced in the hypothalamus, with a disulfide bridge between cysteine residues at positions 1 and 6. Its sequence is Cys-Tyr-Ile-Gln-Asn-Cys-Pro-Leu-Gly-NH2 with a molecular weight of approximately 1,007.2 Da. First synthesized by Vincent du Vigneaud in 1953 — work that earned the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1955 — Oxytocin is studied in neuroendocrine research models that investigate social behavior signaling, oxytocin receptor (OXTR) pathway function, and central nervous system neuropeptide signaling. Also referenced as Oxt, OT, or the cuddle hormone in popular literature, it is supplied as a lyophilized powder for laboratory reference use.
